This may be the first time I’ve ever advertised a book on this blog without having read a word in it but as the saying goes, there’s a first time for everything. The video is a promo ad for the forth-coming book by Scot McKnight titled The King Jesus Gospel: The Good News Revisited. See his bio page (here) if you wish to know more about McKnight. As one who has read several of his books, I can tell you that they lack nothing in terms of theological and biblical depth and yet are very readable.
I heard McKnight deliver some lectures last spring on the question of “what is the Gospel of Jesus Christ?” so I feel like I have some idea of what will be said in the book and based on that, I feel this is a very needed book. In too many quarters of contemporary Christian, the Gospel seems to have simply been reduced to mere fire insurance from the judgment of God. Without a question, the Gospel of Jesus Christ involves the salvation of sinners but I don’t believe anyone can read about Jesus, the life he lived and the message he preached, and come away thinking the gospel is merely about getting saved from hell so that we can go to heaven. Such reductionistic thinking has no way to account for Jesus’ own words when he first proclaimed the gospel, “‘The time has come,’ he said. ‘The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news'” (Mk 1.15).
