Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Peace

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in America.  So in honor of his life and the cause he led, here is a lesson the church could learn from Dr. King about the way we bear witness for Jesus and his kingdom.

As we all know, Dr. King had a vision that all people, including Black Americans, would be treated equal as people all created in the image of God.  And in a day and time when everything from discrimination to murder was used to oppress Black Americans and other minorities, it would have been easy to take this fight into his own hands with a violent revolution.  He had the influence to do it.  But instead Dr. King understood that God’s way is the way of Jesus, which is the way of peace rather than violence.

Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do the right thing… Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”  What he was doing was giving his “Amen” to God’s way…believing the way of Jesus and believing that God would bring about his will in this way.
